Hold Producers Accountable to Reduce Plastic Packaging in California!

Ensure the strongest implementation of the Plastic Pollution Prevention and Packaging Producer Responsibility Act (SB 54).

On June 30, 2022, Governor Newsom signed SB 54 (Allen, 2022) into law to address the impacts of single-use packaging and plastic food service ware. SB 54 requires that by 2032, single-use plastic packaging and food service ware is cut by 25%, and 100% of single-use packaging and plastic food service ware is recyclable or compostable.

Another key component is that SB 54 raises $5 billion from industry members over 10 years under the Plastic Pollution Mitigation Funds.

The successful implementation of SB 54 hinges on the state maintaining strong oversight of the Producer Responsibility Organization and the regulatory process.

In California, we see firsthand the consequences of single-use plastics on our coastlines. This year alone, our beach cleanup volunteers have collected 23,714 plastic food wrappers, 2,149 plastic food containers, 6,118 plastic lids, 8,458 plastic straws, and 66,783 cigarette butts, along with thousands of other discarded plastic items. These numbers represent only a fraction of what washes onto our beaches and into the ocean, underscoring the urgent need for upstream solutions and producer accountability.

California has long led the nation in advancing environmental protections, and SB 54 represents a critical opportunity to reduce plastic pollution and accelerate the transition to a circular economy by prioritizing equitable refill and reuse systems.
